Optimizing Leroy Merlin's Automated Storage

with Utz EUROTEC Containers

Executive summary

Leroy Merlin, a major player in the global home improvement market, collaborated with TGW Logistics Group and Utz to revolutionize their supply chain operations in France. To support a high-performance automated shuttle system, the retailer required a robust, custom load carrier capable of handling a diverse range of DIY products. Utz supplied the specialized EUROTEC containers, ensuring seamless integration with TGW’s automation, maximized throughput, and alignment with strict sustainability standards.

The Client

As part of the Adeo Group, Leroy Merlin is a leading retailer in the DIY and gardening sector, serving millions of customers who want to improve their homes and living environments. To maintain their competitive edge and meet the growing demands of both in-store replenishment and e-commerce, Leroy Merlin established a state-of-the-art distribution center in Mions, France. This facility serves as a critical hub for their logistics network, requiring a solution that blends speed, precision, and reliability.

The challenge

Managing logistics for a home improvement retailer presents unique challenges due to the sheer variety of stock keeping units (SKUs). Leroy Merlin’s inventory ranges from small hardware items to heavy tools and bulky equipment. The Mions facility needed to consolidate storage while ensuring rapid order fulfillment for regional shops and online customers.

The primary challenge was implementing an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) that could handle this product's diversity without compromising speed or safety. The system required load carriers that were not only dimensionally precise for the automated shuttles but also durable enough to withstand the heavy loads typical of the DIY sector.

Furthermore, as a responsible corporate citizen, Leroy Merlin required a solution that adhered to high fire safety regulations and aligned with their environmental sustainability goals.

The solution

To address these complex requirements, Leroy Merlin partnered with TGW Logistics Group for the system integration and Utz Group for the load carriers. The solution focused on the deployment of Utz EUROTEC containers, specifically optimized for automated handling.

Working in close cooperation with TGW, Utz Group supplied a container solution tailored to the dynamics of the FlashPick® smart order fulfillment system. The EUROTEC containers were selected for their exceptional stability and suitability for automated mini-load systems.

Key features of the Utz solution included

  • Optimized base design: The containers feature a specialized base that ensures smooth, quiet running on conveyors and secure gripping by the TGW Stingray shuttles.
  • Fire safety compliance: The bins were designed with integrated water drainage holes, meeting strict sprinkler system requirements to ensure safety within the high-density warehouse.
  • Versatile compartmentalization: To handle the wide mix of SKUs, the containers are compatible with dividers, allowing multiple different items to be stored in a single bin, thereby increasing storage density.
  • Sustainable materials: Crafted from high-quality, recyclable polypropylene (PP), the containers support Leroy Merlin’s sustainability initiatives by ensuring a long lifecycle and eventual recyclability

The result

The integration of Utz EUROTEC containers into the TGW system has transformed operations at the Mions distribution center. The precise interaction between the load carriers and the automated shuttles has eliminated jams and interruptions, ensuring 24/7 operational capability.

The robust design of the EUROTEC bins allows Leroy Merlin to handle heavy DIY products with confidence, while the high storage density has optimized the use of the facility's cubic volume. By utilizing a reusable, recyclable transport solution, the company has also significantly reduced packaging waste and its carbon footprint.

Conclusion

The successful collaboration between Leroy Merlin, TGW, and Utz Group demonstrates the importance of selecting the right load carrier for automated logistics. By choosing the Utz EUROTEC, Leroy Merlin secured a future-proof solution that balances heavy-duty performance with environmental responsibility. This project highlights Utz Group’s ability to deliver smart, creative, and sustainable solutions that drive efficiency in the most demanding retail environments.
