Executive summary

To address the growing demands of the online grocery sector, Frisco, a leading Polish retailer, partnered with TGW Logistics and Utz to revolutionize their fulfillment operations. Utilizing TGW’s cutting-edge automation technologies and innovative software, alongside the integration of Utz’s container solutions, Frisco significantly enhanced efficiency, scalability, and sustainability. This comprehensive solution quadrupled processing capacity, reduced lead times, and enabled same-day deliveries, all while maintaining exceptional service quality.
The Client
Located thirteen kilometers northwest of Warsaw, Frisco is one of Poland's leading online grocery retailers. The company, which is part of the Eurocash Group, focuses on service quality and fast delivery. Because they have upgraded their cold chain logistics, they are able to deliver to customers in and around Warsaw seven days a week using their fleet of vehicles and special pickup stations.

The challenge
Frisco faced rising demand for its same-day grocery services. To meet customer expectations and sustain growth, it became clear that their previous fulfillment approach could no longer keep pace.
Frisco’s traditional fulfillment system highlighted several operational challenges that had to be addressed for sustained growth and customer satisfaction. These challenges included:
- Capacity constraints: Expanding order volumes strained their systems, limiting daily fulfillment capabilities,
- Labor dependency: Manual processes increased operating costs and created exposure to workforce fluctuations,
- Perishable waste: Lagging handling times led to increased spoilage, further impacting profitability,
- Scalability roadblocks: Their existing system lacked the adaptability needed to accommodate future expansion.

Automated goods receipt and storage
Frisco’s new 11,000m² facility was outfitted with TGW’s state-of-the-art shuttle warehouse systems, offering 36,000 storage locations. Key features included:
- Advanced storage system: Products are stored in EUROTEC containers supplied by Utz. These containers are designed for use in the automated warehouse, where goods are efficiently stored on shelves. When products are required, the containers are retrieved by a high-speed shuttle system and delivered to ergonomic completion stations. At these stations, human workers select the correct products and quantities, packaging them into bags for customer orders.
- High-speed throughput: The shuttle systems handled over 4,000 items per hour, ensuring rapid alignment with Frisco’s growing fulfillment demands.

Utz container solutions
Utz played a critical role in improving logistical efficiency by supplying two types of specialized containers tailored for Frisco’s fulfillment process.
EUROTEC storage containers
EUROTEC containers are purpose-built for automated shuttle systems, enabling smooth operations and precise product handling in Frisco’s high-tech warehouse environment. They play a key role in maintaining order accuracy and seamless movement of goods.

Nestable delivery containers
- Order delivery: Once products are picked, they are placed into nestable delivery containers, which are specifically designed to hold customer orders during transport to their homes.
- Space-saving design: After order fulfillment, these containers are nested inside one another to reduce storage volume on return trips, saving space during transportation back to Frisco's warehouse.
- Last-mile support: Ergonomic handles simplify manual handling during deliveries, ensuring an efficient and user-friendly system for the final stages of order completion.

Results
Utz's and TGW’s partnership with Frisco delivered impressive performance improvements through advanced technology and the strategic use of specialized containers. Key results included:
- Quadrupled daily capacity: Automation and container efficiencies enabled Frisco to handle four times as many orders, even during peak periods,
- Enhanced customer satisfaction: Reduced lead times allowed Frisco to meet same-day delivery expectations for fresh grocery orders,
- Waste reduction: Faster and more efficient operations significantly minimized perishable spoilage, supporting both profitability and sustainability goals,
- Labor optimization: Reduced dependency on manual processes lowered operational costs and mitigated workforce challenges,
- Scalable fulfillment: The new fulfillment system is designed to adapt to future growth, ensuring resilience in a competitive and evolving market.
