Streamlined logistics for E.Leclerc Drive

with Utz smart containers

Executive summary

E.Leclerc Drive locations in France faced mounting pressure to process more orders while reducing physical strain on employees. The Ville La Grand site in Haute-Savoie needed to scale operations within a constrained 1,500 m² footprint, while the Cesson location struggled with containers incompatible with automated conveyor systems.

Utz delivered tailored solutions: nestable containers with smooth bottoms for seamless automation integration and stackable designs optimized for order fulfillment. The result: a 20% reduction in labor costs, order processing capacity increased from 600 to 950 orders per day, and improved handling of seasonal produce - all while supporting E.Leclerc's sustainability commitments through reusable, recyclable packaging.

The Client

E.Leclerc Drive operates in France's rapidly expanding click-and-collect grocery sector, where speed, accuracy, and scalability determine competitive advantage. With seven Drive locations under development, the organization needed packaging solutions that could keep pace with growth while addressing critical operational challenges:

  • employee ergonomics,
  • automation compatibility,
  • and product handling efficiency.

The Ville la Grand and Cesson sites represented two distinct but interconnected challenges that required innovative container design and close collaboration between Utz, E.Leclerc Drive, and automation partner Actemium

The challenge

Ville la Grand Drive: capacity constraints and labor intensity

Operating from a 1,500 m² facility, the Ville la Grand Drive faced two primary obstacles:

  • Physical strain on employees: Manual handling of orders placed significant physical demands on staff, creating ergonomic concerns and limiting productivity.
  • Scalability limitations: With approximately 600 orders processed daily, the existing system had reached capacity. Growth required a solution that could increase throughput without proportional increases in labor or facility footprint.

Cesson Drive: automation incompatibility

The Cesson location had initially deployed containers from a competitor, but critical design flaws emerged during operation:

  • Conveyor system failures: Grooved container bottoms created friction on roller conveyors, preventing smooth product flow and causing operational bottlenecks.
  • Seasonal product overflow: Insufficient container height led to product spillage, particularly with bulky seasonal items like cabbages and artichokes.
  • Palletizing robot constraints: Existing containers lacked compatibility with automated palletizing equipment, limiting automation potential.

These challenges threatened operational efficiency and scalability across E.Leclerc's expanding Drive network.

The solution

Utz stack/nest containers with bail arms

Utz worked closely with E.Leclerc Drive and Actemium to develop container solutions that addressed each site's unique requirements while maintaining consistency across the network.

For Cesson Drive: blue Internesta containers

Utz deployed custom nestable containers with specifications engineered for automated handling:

  • Dimensions: 600 x 400 x 253 mm
  • Volume: 48 liters
  • Load capacity: 15 kg
  • Weight: 2.6 kg
  • Bottom design: Smooth, solid surface for frictionless conveyor movement
  • Color: Blue (for fresh produce identification)
  • Additional features: Stackable on bars with bag hooks, separator compatibility

The smooth bottom eliminated conveyor friction, while increased height accommodated seasonal produce without spillage. The blue color maintained E.Leclerc's established color-coding system (blue for fresh products), ensuring seamless integration with existing workflows.

Expanded Utz deployment at Cesson

Following successful implementation of the blue Internesta, E.Leclerc Drive expanded its Utz container ecosystem:

  • Green Internesta containers: For ambient temperature products
  • Gray order preparation containers: Optimized for efficient order assembly
  • Dollyfix system: A transport dolly for streamlined order fulfillment and transport

The smooth bottom eliminated conveyor friction, while increased height accommodated seasonal produce without spillage. The blue color maintained E.Leclerc's established color-coding system (blue for fresh products), ensuring seamless integration with existing workflows.
